2016 Toyota Prius - Auto Expo 2016
First car to be based on TNGA platform.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor has displayed the new Prius at the Auto Expo 2016.
The fourth generation 2016 Toyota Prius is Toyota's first model to be based on its new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) modular platform. Measuring 4,540 mm in length, 1,760 mm in width and 1,470 mm in height, the new generation Prius is 60 mm longer, 15 mm wider but 20 mm shorter than the outgoing model. The wheelbase remains unchanged at 2,700 mm.
The swoopy design, although polarizing public perception, helps it achieve an 'exceptional' 0.24 coefficient of drag.
The Toyota Prius retains the 1.8-litre 2ZR-FXE VVT-i naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol for its hybrid powertrain. However, it has been completely re-engineered and has a maximum thermal efficiency of 40%, "the world's highest level in a mass-produced petrol engine." The petrol engine produces 72 kW (98 PS/97 hp) and 142 Nm (14.5 kg-m) of torque.
Working in conjunction with the petrol engine, are two electric motors - one generating 53 kW (72 PS/71 hp) and 163 Nm (16.6 kg-m) of torque, and another developing 5.3 kW (7.2 PS/7 hp) and 55 Nm (5.6 kg-m) of torque. Power is sent to the wheels via electronic continuously variable transmission. Available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive drivetrain configurations in Japan, the JDM-spec 2016 Toyota Prius's fuel economy can be as high as 40.8 km/l (under the JC08 test cycle).
Interior features include 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 4.2-inch color dual Multi-Information Display (MID) with customizable screens, 6-way adjustable driver's seat, 4-way adjustable front passenger seat and Qi wireless charging.
