Suzuki's iconic off-roader will be nothing like the Vitara or Vitara Brezza.

The third generation Suzuki Jimny arrived in 1997 and is set to undergo a complete makeover later this decade. A Suzuki official recently confirmed to CarAdvice that the redesigned, fourth-generation Suzuki Jimny will be based on a ladder-frame platform.

The next-gen Suzuki Jimny will feature Suzuki's ALLGRIP PRO all-wheel drive system.

Speaking to the Australian publication, Takanori Suzuki, Suzuki's General Manager for Oceania and Latin America, assured that the Suzuki Jimny will remain a rugged off-roader. "One thing for sure is, we will keep as a concept, the Jimny a ladder frame, (is a) real off-roader, has a reduction gear," Suzuki said.

"New Jimny, we are planning to introduce a new one as well within a few years time. The Jimny keeps concept, as a real off-roader," he added.

Among other details, weeks back it was reported that the next-gen Suzuki Jimny will feature the company's ALLGRIP PRO all-wheel drive system. The current Jimny equipped with this system employs a transfer case and a limited-slip differential, and the fourth-gen Jimny should get more advanced hardware.

Various reports have indicated that the all-new Jimny could be offered with a 0.66-litre turbocharged, 1.0-litre turbocharged, and 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engines depending on the market it is sold to.

The next-gen Suzuki Jimny could debut at 2017 Tokyo Motor Show either as a concept or as a production vehicle.
