After nearly 18 years, BMW has confirmed that the 8 Series will make a return in an all new second generation avatar in 2018. To preview its exterior and interior, BMW unveiled the 8 Series Concept design study at the Villa D'Este yesterday.
It is claimed to be "a luxurious sports car which embodies both unadulterated dynamics and modern luxury like arguably no other". The design also previews BMW's next generation design philosophy, so expect next generation models to draw cues from the 8 Series concept. Similar to a GT car, the 8 Series concept has long, low lung front-end, a massive kidney grille, slim twin laser headlights and large air intakes for a sporty look up front.
The rear-end has a low, highly sculpted tail with maximum width-enhancing effect for sporty stance. It has wide wheel arches to highlight its RWD nature, and the roofline tapers into the concept's wide rear-end for a clean, dynamic look. The slim, stretched-out rear lights emphasise the width of the car and its muscular stance while looking contemporary. It also has a dark, stylised carbon-fibre diffuser in the lower section flanked by large angular exhaust pipes.
Inside, the design looks cosy, tightly enclosing the driver for that true sports car feel. The centre console is angled towards the driver and features a delightful mix of carbon fibre, aluminium, and gloss black trim. Like the previous car, the new 8 Series will be a 2+2 sports car, with a pair of regular sized seats at the back.
BMW is yet to reveal any of the engine options, but expect it to source the lineup from the 7 Series which uses a range of 3.0L inline-6 and 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine options. The BMW 8 Series family will be based on BMW's CLAR platform which could feature Carbon Core in its construction.
