BMW Motorrad files ‘M 1000 RR’, M 1000 XR’ and ‘M 1300 GS’ trademarks in Germany - Report

It seems that BMW Motorrad is ready to trade the HP or the High-Performance tag on its motorcycle range for a more familiar M branding. The two-wheeler arm of the Bavarian manufacturer has filed for ‘M 1000 RR’, M 1000 XR’ and ‘M 1300 GS’ trademarks in Germany, hinting at performance-oriented variants of its existing products.

BMW Motorrad has filed three new trademarks in Germany - M 1000 RR, M 1000 XR and the M 1300 GS.

The M division, which has been delivering performance-spec variants of the BMW cars, will work its wizardry on BMW Motorrad motorcycles and tune them for higher power and lower weight. The three upcoming models named above will be based on the standard bikes. Thus, the M 1000 RR will be a higher-spec version of the 2020 S 1000 RR supersports. Do note that BMW Motorrad already offers M Package for the S 1000 RR that brings lighter components and more riding mode to the litre-class motorcycle. It will be interesting to see if the M 1000 RR will be a track-only tool (like the HP4 Race) or a street-legal product (like the S 1000 RR HP4).

The M 1000 XR will be based on 2020 (yet to be launched) S 1000 XR adventure/sports tourer. The M 1300 GS is the most confusing name in the list as the GS tag indicates off-road-focused motorcycle. The latest GS series bike, which uses a 1,254 cc boxer-twin engine, bears R 1250 GS branding. The 1300 tag, on the other hand, was last seen on the K 1300 R and the K 1300 GT – both featuring an inline four-cylinder motor. The source report suggests that BMW may have rounded up the figure in the branding for the M model while retaining the engine displacement.

The unveiling and launch details are scarce, although we may hear some details at the 2019 INTERMOT show in Germany or the 2019 EICMA event in Italy.

The BMW M division will improve the performance and reduce the weight on the upcoming motorcycles for an even appealing and aggressive package.

Back in India, BMW Motorrad recently updated its product portfolio with the launch of the new R 1250 R (Roadster) and the R 1250 RT (Sports Tourer). Imported via the CBU route, the R 1250 R and R 1250 RT are available at INR 15.95 lakh* and INR 22.50 lakh* respectively. Both motorcycles draw power from the same 1,254 cc twin-cylinder Boxer engine that makes 100 kW or 136 hp at 7,750 rpm and a peak torque of 143 Nm at 6,250 rpm. The motor benefits from BMW’s ShiftCam technology for a linear power across the rev-range.
