Hyundai India's MPV could borrow parts from Creta - Report
Expected to launch before 2017.
Hyundai India is looking to enter the MPV segment with a new model codenamed 'IP'. A report on Autocar India now suggests that development is well underway, with sources having told Indian Autos Blog that a market launch will take place by 2017.
The as-yet-unnamed MPV will ride on a mix of various platforms, states the publication, with certain components even coming from the Grand i10. However, it will not use the Creta's platform as such, owing to the higher cost (the Creta is based on a relatively more expensive platform, a modified Elantra platform).
Power for the MPV is expected to come from 1.4-liter petrol and diesel engines (the same engines powering the Verna), and Hyundai is also considering an automatic variant to attract the self-driven buyer.
The MPV segment is one of 2 all-new segments where Hyundai wants to sell its products. According to reports, the car maker is also looking at the sub-4 meter SUV space, where the EcoSport currently enjoys a monopoly of sorts. Put together, the MPV and SUV segments (classified as the UV segment) account for about 21 percent of the car market in India.
