The exterior design draws heavy design cues from the MG CS Concept, which was unveiled at 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. It sits on the current Ssangyong Korando platform, since parent company SAIC once had a controlling stake in Ssangyong. According to a Chinese report, the rear suspension of the GTS SUV is based on the Volkswagen Tiguan and MG has called the resulting platform "SSA".
