IAB Report - Scania commences pilot testing of ethanol powered city bus with Nagpur Municipal Corporation

Scania Commercial Vehicle India Ltd. has handed over the first ethanol powered city bus to Nagpur Municipal Corporation for trial runs.

The ethanol driven Scania CityWide bus is future ready with Bharat Stage V compliance.

Earlier, the VW-owned Swedish commercial vehicle major announced that it will start the pilot tests this month before launching a full scale operation. Handing over the vehicle to the Municipal authorities, Mr. Anders Grundströmer, Managing Director, Scania Commercial Vehicles India and Senior Vice President, Scania Group said that the ethanol powered public transport solutions would reduce greenhouse gas emission and air pollution.

Scania has over 20 years of experience in ethanol powered buses and has delivered the same to countries like the UK, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Norway, etc. The company says the out of all renewable biofuel options, ethanol is the most cost effective one in terms of availability, infrastructure and accessibility.

The biofuel which can be generated locally is claimed to reduce fossil CO2 emissions by as much as 90% compared to diesel fuel.

Talking to Indian Autos Blog earlier, Mr. Grundströmer said that the company is setting up a biofuel plant within its factory premises near Bangalore for research purposes. The objective is to arrive at the most effective method of synthesizing ethanol.

Scania has been gradually increasing its presence in the rear engined intercity coach segment.
