Toyota Prius Prime (Toyota Prius PHV) spotted in the wild in Japan
Unveiled at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.
Japanese website Minkara has posted pictures of the Toyota Prius Prime (PHEV) in Japan. The report states that the Prius Prime will go on sale in Japan during Autumn 2016. Toyota announced at the car's world premiere in New York in March that it will launch in late fall (towards December) in the USA.
The JDM-spec Toyota Prius Prime will apparently be called the 'Toyota Prius PHV' judging by the badge on the boot. Although it has the silhouette of the regular Prius, the Prius PHV has quad-LED headlights, vertical LED DRLs, and new grille design, foglights and bumpers. The rear-end has a unique pair of LED taillamps and aggressive slashes on either side of the bumper.
The interior is largely similar to the regular Prius, save for the 11.6-inch portrait touchscreen in the centre console for the infotainment system and full colour head-up display. It will also be available with an exclusive suite of apps to manage the car’s charging schedule, charging status and locate charging stations from a mobile device.

The Prius Prime packs a 1.8L Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder petrol engine paired to an electric motor and a CVT. The electric motor is powered by a larger 8.8 kWh battery pack which can be charged by plugging in to an external source of power. It can offer a full-electric driving range of 22 miles (35.4 km) and a a combined driving range of over 600 miles (965.6 km).
