First Look: Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion

VW

The German assault on the Indian Market continues. The new contender in the D+ segment – The Passat BlueMotion was launched yesterday in Mumbai in its full glory. This is a second launch from VW in the same month, earlier one being the VW Vento IPL edition. This is also the first time VW is introducing the ‘Blue Motion’ technology in the Indian Market. So let’s get down to whats what?

VW

Design

A lot of you guys would think that the design of this car is very dull and your argument being it is same design language that features in the VW Tiguan, new Jetta & Toureg.

LED

Personally, I don’t agree with the same. Yes, this car may not have a very flashy and flamboyant design but there is a distinct solidity in the design that is very hard to find these days. And let’s face it, aren’t we just bored looking at the same Accords and Superbs on our streets. This car brings something new, something interesting to the table that we have been wanting since a very long time. And those LEDs are just the icing on the cake.

VW

There is a pleasant mismatch in the design of the car. As you can see that the Front is all blinged-up with a lot of chrome on the grill and day time LEDs but the rear is very simple and elegant. The side profile is also very simple and minimalistic.

VW

Interiors

The Interiors are the real party piece of this car. Undoubtedly, one of the best interiors to be in (when it comes to fit and finish) and at par or even better than a Skoda Superb (runs in the family I guess). There is a perfect balance of leather, chrome and wood. Not a single piece feels tacky or out place in any way.

VW

Small and distinct touches like a chunky gear level, an analogue watch and body-hugging plush leather seats make this a place you don’t want to get out of :)

VW

If there is a point of criticism (and there always is), one can say that it is not as spacious and roomy as its competition.

VW

Engine and performance

India, as of right now, only gets the diesel motor which is not a bad thing considering petrol prices are touching 65 Rs/L. It is a 2.0L, 4 cylinder, CRDI engine with max output of 170 PS @ 4200 rpm and 350 Nm of torque 1750-2500 rpm. The engine is mated to a DSG automatic gearbox with tiptronic function for those who love to shift cogs. Being a BlueMotion, the engine also features start-stop function to save fuel when the car is stationary.

VW

Features

Hats off to VW for getting a high end features like Attention Assist and Park Assist in a relatively lower category. This car features a host of functionalities and features based on the theme of fuel saving and luxury. The list of features includes:

  • Fuel efficient engine
  • Gear shift indicator
  • Particulate filter
  • Rolling resistance tyres
  • Extra lightweight wheels
  • Low-friction drive shafts.
  • ESP with ABS
  • Rear view camera
  • Sunroof
  • Tyre pressure monitoring system and the list just goes on!

Frankly, we are quite surprised that how is VW able to offer so much value at a very low cost.

VW

Verdict

If you are always chauffeured around to your destination, then the Skoda Superb makes more sense for you because of the ample space in the rear. But if you love to drive and want something new, exciting and different in the D+ segment, the VW Passat Blue Motion is just right for you. Plus, you will also impress the ladies with your newly earned ‘environmentalist’ badge. Although, don’t bring that up on your first date ;)
