Volvo XC40 gets new 1.5L three-cylinder petrol engine
Volvo has announced that the Volvo XC40 is now available with an all-new 1.5-litre Drive-E three-cylinder petrol engine. This is the company’s first new three-cylinder engine in its 91-year history.
Volvo’s all-new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine was developed in-house using the same modular design as its four-cylinder Drive-E engines. Called T3, the new engine joins the existing range of T5 2.0-litre Drive-E four-cylinder petrol and D4 2.0-litre Drive-E four-cylinder diesel engines in the Volvo XC40. It delivers 156 hp at 5,000 rpm and 265 Nm of torque from 1,850-3,850 rpm. A 6-speed manual transmission sends power to the front wheels. Next year, Volvo will start offering the new engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The 1.5-litre Drive-E engine is set to make the Volvo XC40 even more eco-friendly in the future. Volvo will integrate it into in a Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain for the new entry-level SUV. The company will offer a pure electric powertrain too at a later date.
Along with the T3 1.5-litre petrol engine, Volvo has introduced a T4 2.0-litre Drive-E petrol engine and a D3 2.0-litre Drive-E diesel engine. The petrol engine produces 190 hp at 4,700 rpm and 300 Nm of torque from 1,400-4,000 rpm. It is coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The diesel engine develops 150 hp at 3,750 rpm and 320 Nm of torque from 1,750-3,000 rpm. It is paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed automatic transmission. An AWD system is available with both these four-cylinder engines.

Volvo now offers the Volvo XC40 in the Inscription trim level as well, with features like 18-, 19- or 20-inch wheels, unique skid plates, side window and grille mesh chrome, newly designed crystal gear knob and Driftwood decor inlays.
