Will rival the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

Mr. Carlos Santos, Director at Volkswagen Group Australia, recently confirmed that a VW Amarok-based SUV is in the works. Now, a speculative rendering from Theophilus Chin shows how the VW Amarok-based SUV may look like.

The VW Amarok-based SUV will be a three-row, 7-seat SUV.

The speculative rendering is actually based on the pre-facelift VW Amarok. However, it still gives a good idea of what to expect in terms of shape and size. The rendering suggests a typically boxy design for the SUV. Mr. Santos reportedly said that it "will be quite a large passenger vehicle".

The VW Amarok-based SUV is getting close to reality due to the introduction of the V6 engine in the pickup with the facelift earlier this year. Previously the mid-size pickup was offered only with 2.0-litre engines which wouldn't have helped make a business case for the U.S. market. The V6 engine is the same 3.0-litre TDI unit offered in the VW Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne.

The VW Amarok-based SUV will be powered by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine.

The new mid-size SUV from Volkswagen will offer seating for seven and rival the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Mitsubishi Pajero. It remains to be seen how it will be positioned with the VW CrossBlue concept's production version also on the way.
