An oil catch can is an aftermarket device designed to improve engine performance and longevity by capturing oil vapors and contaminants that escape from the crankcase ventilation system. These vapors, if left unchecked, can re-enter the intake manifold and mix with the air-fuel mixture, leading to several issues.

Purpose and Benefits:

  1. Prevents Carbon Build-Up: Oil vapors can lead to carbon deposits on the intake valves, especially in direct injection engines where fuel does not wash over the valves. A catch can reduces this build-up, ensuring smoother engine operation.
  2. Enhances Engine Efficiency: By keeping the intake system clean, it helps maintain optimal combustion, which can improve fuel economy and power output.
  3. Reduces Engine Knock: Contaminants in the intake charge can cause pre-ignition or knocking, which is harmful to engine health. A catch can minimizes this risk.
  4. Protects the Turbocharger (if applicable): For turbocharged engines, an oil catch can ensures that oil-laden vapors don’t coat the turbo’s compressor wheel, which could affect performance and longevity.
  5. Minimizes Oil Consumption: Without a catch can, some oil may get burned off during combustion, leading to higher oil consumption. The catch can collects this oil for disposal, keeping the engine healthier.

How It Works:

The oil catch can is installed between the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve and the intake manifold. As crankcase gases flow through the can, oil droplets and contaminants are trapped, and only clean air is sent back to the intake system.

While not mandatory for all vehicles, an oil catch can is especially beneficial for performance-oriented or high-mileage cars.
