Indian Autos Blog reader Chaitanya Pise was in Italy this past weekend and he's been to a special place of interest to petrolheads. Let's just say that his journey is more special than a visit to Maranello, Monza or Nardo. Read on..
Concorso means competition in Italian. But what makes this competition so special?
This event began in 1929 as a competition for restored cars and also worked out as an exhibition for potential buyers for the classic restored cars.
It is held in a villa named Villa d’erba located on the banks of the fabulous lake Como in the city of Cernobbio which is 84 kilometers to the north of Milan. It is definitely the most beautiful city I have ever seen. Even George Clooney apart from other big stars has a villa in this city.
Today there is an additional event in which design houses specially design and build working concepts for. This year’s special was the Zagato BMW Z4 Coupe which was the crowd puller and gave a huge significance to this event. The other concepts were the Ford Evos, Guigiaro Brivido, Rimac Concept One, Aston Martin 310, Lexus LF-A, BMW i8, Alfa Romeo 4C, Bertone Jaguar B99, Pininfarina Cambiano, Zagato Aston Martin DB7 and Bentley GTZ and the Rinspeed Dock+Go.
The classic cars included the Lamborghini Miura and Countach, Ferrari 250 GTO, Berlinetta, California and others, Porsche 917 le mans edition, Ford GT 40 original, BMW 507, Mercedes SL 300, 1925 Rolls Royce Phantom fastback which was very special and sleek, and the iconic BMW M1.
Apart from the famous brands, there were some very bizarre concepts like an amphibian vehicle called ‘Amphibicar’ that made its entry via the lake!
We could hear and see many people trying to sell and buy vintage cars dealing in millions of euros.
There was a special area dedicated to the BMW Motorsport division which included all their track and race purpose built cars and bikes as well. As BMW organizes the event, there was a stall of all production cars by them accessible to the public and a dedicated merchandise shop.
