The new Roomster will be based on the 2015 Caddy.

Spy photographers have snapped the second generation of Skoda's practical Roomster on test, ahead of an unveiling which could take place towards the end of this year, or early next year. Interestingly, the spyshots reveal that the new Roomster will be based on the 2015 VW Caddy, which marked its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show this year.

The 2016 Skoda Roomster could do away with the sliding rear doors, according to reports.

Using the new Caddy as a base, our artist, Shoeb, has created a digital mockup of the 2016 Skoda Roomster, giving it the new family look composed of the wide headlights, the typical Skoda grille with a power bulge on the bonnet and rectangular foglight enclosures.

The engine line-up for the new Roomster is expected to mirror that of the Caddy. The petrol range includes a 1.0-liter three-cylinder TSI, and 1.2- and 1.4-liter four-cylinder TSI engines while the diesel TDI engines offer power outputs between 75 PS to 150 PS.

For the Caddy, which is also sold through VW Commercial Vehicles, the German major upped the safety equipment on offer. Autonomous Emergency Braking, Multi-Collision Brake System and an Adaptive Cruise Control were among the notable feature inclusions, which should find their way on the Roomster as well.

The new Caddy also gets additional connectivity options to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The European media report that the Roomster could do away with the sliding rear doors found on the Caddy, and opt for conventional ones instead. The sliding rear doors instantly convey the message that the vehicle is an MPV, or a van, whereas conventional hinged doors could position the Roomster as an extension of a hatchback, much like the first generation model.

Skoda Auto India has no plans on introducing the Roomster in the country. The Czech car maker is focussed on bringing the next generation Superb, which is expected to launch before H2 2016.
