Neither body-on-frame nor monocoque.

According to a report from Autocar India, the next generation Tata Sumo, due for a market launch in 2018, will be based on an all-new lightweight platform, codenamed 'Raptor'. The Raptor platform will also underpin a range of affordable SUVs and MUVs other than the Sumo.

Interestingly, the Raptor platform is neither a body-on-frame nor a monocoque. It will make use of a Body Integrated Frame construction, which allows the frame to be welded to the chassis. Engineers would have better flexibility with this construction, as they can adjust the level of stiffness required depending on the application; a rugged SUV will have a heavier frame while a crossover-like road-going vehicle will have a lighter one.

According to one person in the know, a body-on-frame architecture was becoming too heavy to achieve future CO2 emissions and fuel efficiency figures. With considerably lower weight, yet maintaining similar interior space, the new Sumo could put Tata Motors back in the spotlight in the UV segment.
