General Motors plans to introduce the new Mini SUV from Chevrolet, the Trax into the Chinese automarket and has filed the patent for the same.
The Buick Encore which uses the same platform has already been launched in China with a starting price of 149,900 Yuan (roughly Rs.12.6 Lakhs). We expect GM to price the Chevrolet Trax attractively as there would be great competition in this segment in the coming years.
The Trax could be locally built at the Shanghai-GM facility, though official confirmation is awaited. It could be powered by 1.4L engine with turbo or get the 1.6L unit. Transmission setup could be 6-speed manual or automatic.
GM India has not yet confirmed the launch of the Trax, though the MD Mr. Lowell Paddock told IndianAutosBlog.com that the company considering various global GM products for India. Currently their main focus is on the Sail twins and the Enjoy MPV.
Chevrolet Trax is GM’s answer to the growing segment of Mini SUVs. If it ever lands on the Indian shore it could be rebadged as the Tracker, as the name Trax is already utilized by Force Motors. When it arrives here the main obstacles in its path to success will be Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport.
