ET Auto reports that the Datsun redi-GO, the most affordable model in the Nissan-Datsun portfolio, is slated to receive a mid-cycle facelift next year. Other than a revised styling, the refreshed version should receive safety-enhancing updates to enable the entry-level model to comply with new Indian safety norms.

The exterior of the Datsun redi-GO is based on the company's YUKAN design language.

With the launch of the facelift, all trim levels of the Datsun redi-GO will receive a driver side airbag, ABS with EBD, Seatbelt Reminder (SBR) for front passengers, speed warning alert, speed-sensing door lock, crash-sensing door unlock, and rear parking sensors. Furthermore, the company will have to make structural changes to attain compliance with crash tests.

The specifications will remain mostly unchanged, save for the introduction of the BSVI-compliant motors. The Datsun redi-GO has been available with two three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine options - 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre. The former outputs a maximum power of 54 PS at 5,678 rpm along with a peak torque of 72 Nm at 4,386 mm. The bigger motor delivers a maximum power of 68 PS at 5,500 rpm and a peak torque of 91 Nm at 4,250 rpm. Both the engines come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Additionally, the 1.0-litre variant is available with an optional 5-speed AMT.

The Datsun redi-GO made its concept debut at the Auto Expo 2014 and went on sale in June 2016. The 1.0-litre version was introduced in July 2017. So far, the budget offering from Nissan-Datsun India has little to show in cracking the A-segment. With an average monthly sales of 1,594 units*, its several times less popular than the segment leader Maruti Alto (21,937 units*). In fact, it even lags behind the Renault Kwid (5,413 units*), with which it shares the CMF-A platform.
