To rival Mini Countryman JCW and Nissan Juke Nismo RS.

According to a report from Automotive News, Fiat's Skunkworks division Abarth is mulling over expanding its lineup with products bigger than the 500 mini hatchback.

While the Abarth 124 Spider is in the works, Fiat boss Paolo Gagliardo hasn't shot down the idea of an Abarth 500X to rival hot mini crossovers like the Mini Countryman JCW and Nissan Juke Nismo RS. Autocar UK has posted a rendering of the Abarth 500X, fitted with the usual bits and bobs that are inspired by the Abarth 595 and 695 (500-based hot hatchbacks).

This falls in line with a video of a 500X prototype that was equipped with a twin pipe exhaust, large alloy wheels and a covered badge. If it comes into fruition, the engine likely to power the Abarth 500X is the 1.4-liter MultiAir turbo engine, which could be tuned to output 170 bhp. This engine is rumored to be installed in the Abarth 124 Spider as well. Power will be sent to all four wheels through either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.
