Earlier this month we saw speculative renderings of a 4-door 2020 Ford Bronco. According to a report from Gear Patrol this week, that is exactly what Ford has in mind for its resurrection.

A Jeep Wrangler Unlimited-like 4-door Ford Bronco (illustrated here) makes better sense from the sales volume standpoint.

A Ford engineer close to the sixth-gen Ford Bronco's development says that the Blue Oval has no plans to make a 2-door Ford Bronco because "there’s just no market for it." Those seeking a 2-door rugged SUV would have no choice but to go for the next-gen Jeep Wrangler or maybe pick from the Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser Prado line.

Ford had rejected the design for the next-gen Ford Bronco twice, one time as it looked "too much like a (Jeep) Wrangler". The company has finally locked in a design that looks like a 4-door version of the Troller T4 sold in Brazil, suggests the report. The 2020 Ford Bronco will have a removable roof built in three sections.

Ford is using the Jeep Wrangler as the benchmark vehicle. The Ford Ranger's platform underpinning the next-gen Ford Bronco offers ruggedness, and Ford wants the vehicle comparable to the Jeep Wrangler in every way, except rock crawling. It will have a steel construction and a water wading depth of 500 mm.

As for the engine, Ford is planning something similar to the 325 hp 2.7-litre EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 gasoline engine of the 2017 Ford Fusion Sport. A hybrid version is also under consideration. It's clear that the development is still in the early stages, after all the company had announced the revival in January this year.

The 2020 Ford Bronco will arrive after the 2019 Ford Ranger in the U.S. market. Its production will be from Michigan, USA. Prices will start in the US$30,000 range.
