Ford-1.0-litre ecoboost engine Mr Alan MulallyFord's diminutive yet powerful 1.0L EcoBoost engine was designed to be flexible in varying its displacement, says Mr. Andrew Fraser, head of petrol engine development at Ford.

The three cylinder 1.0 litre EcoBoost which is powering most of the Ford's new global models has won many accolades including the coveted world engine of the year title for 2012.

The turbocharged petrol motor develops 123 bhp which is astonishing given its size. The engine debuts on the EcoSport here in India next year.

Mr. Fraser told the European media that the three cylinder EcoBoost has a maximum capacity of 500 cc per cylinder and hence a more powerful 1.5 litre EcoBoost is certainly possible.

He said, "In growing markets there are incentives for certain sizes of engines, so in Brazil they want a 1.0-litre engine, in India it’s 1.2 and in China it’s 1.5 – the EcoBoost engine could be all of those."

He also said that the 1.0L EcoBoost reached a maximum power output of 220 bhp while testing and the road legal Formula Ford race car which lapped the Nurburgring racetrack was fitted with a 202 bhp version of the motor.

Ford has the flexibility of varying the displacement of the EcoBoost to match the limitations of individual markets, for instance a 1.2 litre engine for India. However, the American auto giant is happy with the 123 bhp 1.0 litre version for now.
