The India-bound Hyundai Kona Electric, which made its local presence felt at the 'Brilliant Kids Motorshow' in November last year, has been showcased at the 2019 Bangkok International Motor Show. The all-electric crossover will be manufactured in India and launch in H2, 2019.
Internationally, the Hyundai Kona Electric has been available in two powertrain variants. The lower version is the one that is headed to India. It is powered by an electric motor that produces a maximum power of 136 PS and a peak torque of 395 Nm. A 39.2 kWh battery pack provides the juice to the engine. The entry-level model has a driving range of 345 km*. It comes with a 7.2 kW onboard charger that can recharge the battery pack completely in six hours through AC. A 100 kW DC fast charger can be used to charge the battery to 80% of its capacity in 54 minutes.
The costlier version of the Hyundai Kona Electric draws power from an electric motor that can produce a maximum power of 204 PS and a peak torque of 395 Nm. The powertrain is fed by a 64 kWh battery pack that provides the user with a driving range of 546 km*. The battery pack can be replenished entirely in 9 hours and 35 minutes through AC. A 100 kW DC fast charger can recharge the battery to 80% of its total capacity in just 75 minutes.
The fully-loaded version of the Hyundai Kona Electric comes with a long list of safety equipment, including Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Collision Warning including Rear Cross Traffic Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Warning, Intelligent Speed Limit Warning and Lane Following Assist.
The Hyundai Kona Electric will launch in the local car market as the manufacturer's first-ever pure electric offering. Its launch will follow the introduction of the Maruti Vitara Brezza-rivaling Styx (QXi) sub-compact SUV.
