Kawasaki Ninja 400 records poor sales of just 162 units in FY2019

The Kawasaki Ninja 400 has registered sales of just 162 units in India in FY2019. The premium sports motorcycle was launched here in April 2018.

The Kawasaki Ninja 400 was initially priced at INR 4.69 lakh*, but the price was later raised to INR 4.99 lakh*.

Like its predecessor that is still on sale in India, the Kawasaki Ninja 300, the Kawasaki Ninja 400 is imported via the CKD route. At the heart of the new model is a 399 cc parallel-twin, DOHC, liquid-cooled engine. Coupled to a 6-speed gearbox, the engine is capable of producing 49 PS of maximum power and 38 Nm of peak torque. It is housed in a trellis frame inspired from the Kawasaki H2.

The Ninja 400 rides over 41 mm telescopic fork upfront and a bottom link, gas charged monoshock in the rear. Braking duties are administered by a 310 mm petal disc with dual piston calliper in the front and a 220 mm petal disc with a mono piston calliper in the rear. A non-ABS version is available internationally, but here, a dual-channel ABS is standard. The bike tips the scales at 173 kg and has a 140 mm ground clearance. The headlight is an all-LED unit.

While the Kawasaki Ninja 400 sold 162 units in India last fiscal, the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and the Kawasaki Versys 300 together sold 1,169 units.

The Kawasaki Ninja 400 is loaded to the gills but has missed out on sales due to its high price tag. Launched at INR 4.69 lakh*, the bike’s price tag was later raised to INR 4.99 lakh*. In comparison, the Kawasaki Ninja 300 is significantly cheaper with a price tag of INR 2.98 lakh*. Combined volume for the Ninja 300 and the Versys 300 in the last fiscal stood at 1,169 units, marking a significant jump from 469 units in FY 2017-18.FY2
