KTM launched its highest displacement model for the Indian market on 23 September this year, at an ex-showroom price tag of INR 8,63,945*. In the first phase, KTM has introduced the motorcycle in just nine cities - Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Guwahati, Surat, Delhi, Hyderabad and Chennai. The company will increase its availability to over 30 cities by April 2020 for the second phase.

To give you a recap, the KTM 790 Duke packs premium hardware, a power-packed engine and a comprehensive electronics package. The naked roadster features full-LED lighting and full-colour TFT instrument console. Bluetooth connectivity is not available as standard, although the KTM MY RIDE can be added via the optional Power Parts.

The ride-by-wire throttle brings four riding modes – Sport, Street, Rain and Track. The Track Mode can be customized for throttle response, Traction Control and Wheelie Control among other parameters. Key safety features include traction control, switchable ABS (with Supermoto mode – disengages rear ABS), cornering ABS, Wheelie Control and Motor Slip Regulation (MSR).

In terms of performance, the KTM 790 Duke uses the company’s first parallel twin-cylinder motor. The engine, currently in BS-IV guise, is a 799 cc parallel-twin, liquid-cooled, 8-valve, DOHC unit that pumps out 105 hp of peak power at 9,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 87 Nm at 8,000 rpm. The parallel-twin motor is paired with a six-speed transmission that uses PASC slip-assist clutch and features a Quickshifter+ (up and downshifts).

Braking hardware comprises dual-disc brakes on the front wheel and a single rotor at the back. KTM has worked with the Spanish brand, J.Juan to develop the braking setup. Shock absorption department features WP-sourced, 43 mm inverted forks (non-adjustable) at the front and a pre-load adjustable monoshock at the back. A mysterious test mule with the 790 Duke badge was seen with adjustable front forks and Brembo levers. It could be a more premium variant of the 790 Duke, most likely the R variant, or the 890 Duke.
