Autocar India reports that the new Mahindra Rexton, which will be introduced on 19 November, will not follow the company's alphanumeric nomenclature. While it has been rumoured that the G4 Ssangyong Rexton would launch in India as the 'XUV700', the latest revelation should put all such speculations to rest.

Ssangyong started shipping CKD kits of the Rexton to India in August 2018.

As per the report, Mahindra & Mahindra feels that a standalone name will help the Mahindra-badged Rexton benefit from a distinct identity. The company seems to have been encouraged by the buzz created by the 'Marazzo' for its latest MPV. While the Italian-sounding name doesn't establish a clear connection with other Mahindra models, it has successfully garnered enough traction on the social media, which has, in turn, helped the new model stay in the limelight.

At the launch of the Marazzo, Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra had said that the name for the Mahindra-badged Rexton will be provocative and will “get people talking.” Visually, except for the new grille and Mahindra badges, the flagship will be exactly like the G4 Ssangyong Rexton sold abroad. The new model will be pitted against the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the Isuzu MU-X.

The Mahindra Rexton will be powered by a 2.2-litre e-XDi220 LET turbocharged diesel engine that outputs a maximum power of 183 bhp along with a peak torque of 420 Nm. Transmission options will include the Mercedes-sourced 7-speed automatic while a 4WD system with three selectable modes will also be on the menu.

The Mahindra Rexton should launch at a price of roughly INR 24 lakh. Its immediate rivals will include Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, and Isuzu MU-X.

The G4 Ssangyong Rexton is claimed to be the world's first model to feature a quad-frame body structure with 63% 1.5Gpa-grade high-strength steel. The safety net on offer should include an electric parking brake, ABS with EBD, nine airbags, hill assist control, and traction control. While the SsangYong Rexton is internationally available in 5- and 7-seat versions, the Indian version is likely to be sold as a three-row SUV.
