The Mahindra Y400/Mahindra Rexton has been spotted testing by IAB reader Rajesh near Chennai ahead of its launch later this month. In August it was confirmed that Ssangyong had started shipping CKD packs of the G4 Rexton to India. The market name of the model is yet to be confirmed, but the Ssangyong SUV will be sold here as a Mahindra's flagship model.

The Mahindra Y400 could launch at an ex-showroom price of roughly INR 24 lakh, which puts it in the same segment as the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, and Isuzu MU-X.

The India-bound Mahindra Rexton will look almost exactly like its Ssanyong-branded counterpart. The only change will be due to a new grille that will hold a Mahindra badge. Features on offer should include HID headlights, LED Daytime Running Lamps (DRL), ventilated seats, leather upholstery, electric sunroof and a 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Powering the Y400 is a 2.2-litre e-XDi220 LET turbocharged diesel engine that outputs a maximum power of 187 PS and a peak torque of 420 Nm. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a Mercedes-sourced 7-speed automatic unit. Part-time 4WD is likely to be offered. Globally, the G4 Rexton is also on sale with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine mated to an Aisin-sourced 6-speed automatic transmission. This variant is unlikely to be sold in India owing to the low demand for petrol-powered SUVs.

The G4 Mahindra Rexton is claimed to be the world's first model to employ a quad-frame body structure with 63% 1.5Gpa-grade high-strength steel. Internationally, the flagship SUV is on sale with advanced driver assistance systems, including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Detection and a Front Vehicle Start Alarm. The Indian-spec version, however, is likely to miss out on most of these. The safety kit on the model headed to India should include an electric parking brake, nine airbags, ABS with EBD and traction control.

Dr Pawan Goenka said at the launch of the Marazzo (pronounced with an Italian flair) that the name of the next model (the Y400) would create an equal buzz. The model will not be called the XUV700.

The Mahindra Rexton is 4,850 mm long, 1,960 mm wide, 1,825 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,865 mm. Its prices could start at roughly INR 23 lakhs. Following the launch of the new flagship, the company will introduce the Maruti Vitara Brezza-rivalling S201 sub-4-metre SUV early next year.
