Maruti Suzuki becomes first Indian car maker to roll out 15 million cars - IAB Report

Milestone comes 31 years since the company started making cars in India.

Maruti Suzuki today rolled out its 15 millionth car becoming the first Indian car maker to hit this number. The 15 millionth Maruti was a Swift Dzire VDi, which was manufactured at the Manesar facility of the car maker.

Products such as the 800, Alto and Omni have contributed significantly to the milestone.

The company achieved this milestone in 31 years and 5 months since the first Maruti (Maruti 800) was produced at the Gurgaon facility in December 1983. Models that have significantly contributed to this milestone are the 800, Alto, Omni, Wagon R and newer models such as the Swift and Dzire.

Going forth, Maruti Suzuki's Executive Director for Production, Rajiv Gandhi, said that the company was looking to breach the 20 million mark in "good time by making quality products". With a current market share of 45 percent, Maruti is looking to increase this number by way of entering new segments.

For 2015, Maruti plans on entering the sub-compact diesel segment with the Celerio diesel, the crossover space with the SX4 S-Cross (A-Cross) and the premium hatchback segment with the 'YRA'. Maruti will also debut in the commercial segment with the Y9T LCV this year.

This financial year, Maruti will launch its sub-4 meter SUV (codenamed YBA), while extending its AMT technology to products like the Wagon R and Stingray.
