Mazda's redesigned compact crossover SUV expected to debut in 2017.

The first generation Mazda CX-5 was introduced in 2011 as the company's first production model featuring the 'KODO - Soul of Motion' design language. Now, Mazda is working on the next generation of its Honda CR-V/VW Tiguan challenger, and a set of speculative renderings from Kolesa Russia have surfaced, based on spyshots of the car's prototypes that began testing this year.

The next-gen Mazda CX-5 is expected to ride on a re-engineered version of the car's current platform.

The second-gen Mazda CX-5 is being developed in the USA, and was spied testing for the first time last month in California. The speculative renderings indicate an evolutionary redesign that will bring the Mazda CX-5 in line with the second-gen Mazda CX-9 and the China-only Mazda CX-4. Like the exterior, the interior should be similar to that of these models.

The next-gen Mazda CX-5 is expected to be based on a re-engineered version of the same platform. The current 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G petrol and 2.2-litre twin-turbo SKYACTIV-D diesel engines are expected to continue, perhaps with increased power and lesser fuel consumption.

The 2.5-litre SKYACTIV-G naturally aspirated petrol engine could be replaced by the new SKYACTIV-G 2.5T turbocharged petrol engine that was introduced with the all-new CX-9 last year. The new turbocharged engine is based on the same naturally aspirated unit employed in the CX-5.
