Skoda Auto has revealed that the MQB A0 platform-based next-gen Skoda Rapid hatchback will be called the 'Scala'. The new model will replace the current generation EU-spec Rapid, which was launched in June 2012 and was joined by a Spaceback model in July 2013.
It's noteworthy that the next-gen Skoda Rapid will be sold only as a hatchback. Furthermore, the company could drop the 'Spaceback' suffix for the new model. Speaking on the new model, Bernhard Maier, CEO, Skoda Auto, has said:
With the new Skoda Scala, we are opening a fresh chapter in ŠKODA’s compact class. This is a completely new development that sets standards in terms of technology, safety and design in this class. We are confident that the Scala has the best chance of redefining the A-segment for Skoda.
Skoda has said that the Scala will feature a "new emotional exterior and interior design language for the first time in series production." The new car will be based on the Vision RS concept that was showcased at the Paris Motor Show earlier this month. A teaser sketch that revealed the name of the next-gen Skoda Rapid hatchback shows a silhouette which is similar to that of the Vision RS. Another teaser reveals that the new model will become the first Skoda to have the brand's name spelt out in individual letters instead of a logo at the rear.
The Skoda Scala will be underpinned by the VW Group's MQB A0 small car platform. Other recipients of this architecture include VW Polo, Seat Ibiza, VW Virtus and the Seat Arona. That said, Skoda's version of this modern architecture for the Scala will be longer than all other iterations used for other models under the VW Group's umbrella.
The Skoda Scala will be sold with 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engines with power outputs ranging from 84 bhp to 109 bhp, and a 1.5-litre petrol motor with a peak power of up to 148 bhp. The company could even offer a 1.6-litre oil-burner. All petrol motors are expected to feature a mild-hybrid system that employs a 48-volt belt starter generator.

The Skoda Scala (next gen EU-spec Skoda Rapid) will launch in early 2019. The new model will rival the likes of the Ford Focus, VW Golf, Honda Civic hatchback, and Peugeot 308.
