Renault has unveiled a new 1.6-liter twin turbo diesel engine at the Geneva Motor Show. The French company says that the engine would be put into use on its D and E segment models.

The 1,598 cc engine can make 160 hp and 380 Nm of torque and is claimed to be 25 percent more fuel efficient compared to a similar competitor engine. Called the Renault Energy dCi, the 1.6-liter engine is the first from Renault to use twin turbocharging.

The company also says that the first of the two turbochargers is a "very low inertia" unit providing high low-end torque for pulling away from idle and mid-range acceleration. Around 90 percent of the generated 380 Nm torque is available from as low as 1,500 rpm. The second turbo kicks in at higher speeds and produces close to 100 hp per 1,000 cc.

The engines, as far as we can tell, could be put into use in the Renault Koleos (which currently uses a 2.0-liter diesel engine) and could also be licensed to Daimler for use in the Mercedes C- and E-Class models.
