Product strategy and industrial design head Mark Wells says that the design of the engine is inspired from a 1948 500 Twin.

The Royal Enfield 650 cc engine’s output figures stand at 47 PS at 7,100 rpm and 52 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The engine is a 648 cc SOHC, 4-valve unit, with a compression ratio of 9.5:1. It features an oil-cooler, apart from the fins for air cooling. The engine comes with a 270 degree crank with a balancer shaft to smoothen out vibrations. The single-piece forged crank takes care of the secondary vibrations. The powerplant mates with a new 6-speed transmission with a slip-assist clutch. Royal Enfield says that the motor is capable of allowing the motorcycle to cruise at 120-135 kmph without breaking a sweat. Initially, it used a 600cc engine, but the brand went for a bigger capacity for better highway performance.

The new Royal Enfield 650 cc engine will power two variants of the bike, which will be revealed this week at the 2017 EICMA show. Royal Enfield has chosen a 650cc configuration to cater to the customers who need a bike that is at home on the highways and not feel too overwhelming. In the UK, the powerplant is A2 licence compliant, so that it is accessible to young riders as well.

The engine nestles inside an all-new chassis. Overdrive reports that Royal Enfield’s UK centre has full in-house engine, chassis and design lifecycle ability. The motorcycles will come with ABS and India is likely to be one of the first markets when the bike’s launch plans commence.
