Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 confirmed for Japan

Toshihiro Suzuki, President, Suzuki Motor Corporation, has confirmed that the Gixxer SF 250 will be launched in the Japanese market. Do note that several private importers such as Bikers Station SOX, Chops and Lex have been already importing the motorcycle in Japan. The official launch will make sourcing spare and replacement parts easily available in Japan. Private importers are importing the vehicle via the CBU route.

To give you a quick recap, the Gixxer SF 250 retails at INR 1,70,655* in the Indian market. Apart from the standard motorcycle, Suzuki also offers a special, MotoGP edition of Gixxer SF 250 in our market. The special MotoGP edition carries a marginal premium over the standard model, and it retails at INR 1,71,456*.

The Gixxer SF 250 features a full fairing design, better aerodynamics and sportier ergonomics. The motorcycle tips the weighing scale at 161 kg kerb. Key features of the quarter-litre Suzuki include LED headlight and tail lamp, digital instrument console, and a brushed finish to the alloy wheels.

In terms of performance, the newly developed 249 cc single-cylinder, SOHC engine with fuel injection and Suzuki Oil Cooling System (SOCS) delivers 26.5 PS of peak power at 9,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 22.6 Nm at 7,500 rpm. The motor comes linked to a six-speed gearbox.

Although unconfirmed, the roadster variant of the Gixxer 250 SF, the Gixxer 250, could also join the company’s product portfolio in the Japanese market. The roadster version uses the same underpinnings as the SF model, although it packs upright ergonomics, and misses windblast protection. Both the 250 cc models had their Japanese premiere at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show yesterday.

Back home, Suzuki Motorcycle India has replaced Hero MotoCorp as third highest scooter seller in our market. The Indian arm of the Japanese two-wheeler brand registered a 17.16% growth, recording 3,41,928 unit sales in H1 2019. In comparison, 2,91,847 units were sold in H1 2018. Do note that Suzuki Motorcycle India’s scooter portfolio comprises just two models – Access 125 and Burgman Street.

In the premium segment, Suzuki Motorcycle India is reportedly planning to introduce the SV650. If launched, the SV650 will rival products such as the Kawasaki Z650 and newly introduced CFMoto 650NK.
