Buoyed by the success of the VW Polo GT, Volkswagen is looking at expanding its performance-oriented model range in India. The company is now considering a VW Ameo GT TSI for our market.
The latest development was revealed by Steffen Knapp, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India in an interview with CarAndBike. “GT TSI on Ameo is one thing we are looking into in order to make that brand as attractive as the Polo,” Mr. Knapp said.
The VW Ameo GT TSI may feature a sportier exterior with smoked headlamps and a trunk lip spoiler as standard. A 'GT' badge on the front grille and the tailgate is a given. Inside, differences from the VW Ameo may include aluminium pedals, 'GT' doorstep garnish and a distinctive upholstery.
In all probability, the VW Ameo GT TSI will sport the same 1.2-litre TSI engine as the VW Polo GT TSI, coupled to the 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. This turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine develops 105 PS at 5,000 rpm and 175 Nm of torque at 1,500-4,100 rpm. A fuel economy rating of around 17-18 km/l is expected for this configuration.
