In a report published this week Autocar UK has revealed the future roadmap of Volvo starting from 2014.

Leading the charge is the successor to the outdated XC90 next year. The 2015 XC90 and the other three products are all based on the MQB-style Volvo Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA in short) and powered by the new family of Volvo Environmental Architecture (VEA) four cylinder engines in petrol and diesel, paired to two manual transmissions or an eight-speed AT.

All future Volvo engines will be four cylinder units producing 140-280 bhp (petrol) and 120-230 bhp (diesel). Volvo will not offer V6 or V8 engines on future products.

The replacement to the XC90 will be followed by the next generation S80 saloon, a V80 estate and finally a short wheelbase 2+2 coupe on the S80 platform christened C80. The replacements of the current S80, and V80 are expected in 2015. Imagine them as twins like the V and S60.

The next generation XC90 would feature distinct tall and bluff front end design and tight overhangs. Like VW's MQB, SPA will use an identical engine bay, bulkhead and pedal position to reduce costs. The overhangs and passenger cell dimensions can be varied depending on the segment. The modular platform allows the wheel track widths to be altered as well.

An eventual successor to the V40 that enters India in April in the Cross Country avatar, according to sources, would sit on a platform shared with another auto manufacturer.

Volvo targets to finish this year with 420,000 cars and sell 800,000 cars worldwide around the year 2020.
