The 2020 Volkswagen Golf (VW Golf Mk8) is only weeks away from being officially unveiled now. In a new development, its exterior design has been completely leaked in spy shots captured during its TVC shoot in Spain, courtesy Forocoches forum member getafenses and Instagram user Carlos Utanda.

The VW Golf Mk8 will have a sharper and more aggressive design.

As visible from the above spy picture, the VW Golf has received a low-profile front-end with much sleeker headlamps, two-part lower air intake and a much sharper bumper. The lower and wider stance makes it reminiscent of the VW Scirocco that has been permanently put to sleep. At the rear, the tailgate has been smoothened up and narrower, L-shaped tail lamps similar to those of the VW Tiguan compact SUV have been incorporated. All in all, the exterior design for the eighth generation is evolutionary.

The seventh-gen VW Golf is available in 3-door hatchback, 5-door hatchback and 5-door estate body styles. The eighth-gen VW Golf will be made only in a 5-door hatchback version.

The eighth-gen VW Golf is going to be longer and wider than the outgoing model, which should lead to a more spacious cabin. The dashboard is likely to have a more minimalist design, further aiding to improvement in occupant space. There will be a brand-new line of infotainment systems from the MIB3 family. The new systems will be placed higher up on the dashboard, to seem aligned with the Active Info Display, and the top-of-the-line unit will be glass-encased. The centre console will be much less cluttered, with a significantly lower amount of buttons occupying the space.

The exterior may be evolutionary but the interior will be leaps ahead of the old model, especially owing to the new advanced technologies onboard. In addition to a brand-new range of infotainment systems, which will have embedded eSIM for being always online, the VW Golf Mk8 will feature a head-up display with augmented reality.

The eighth-gen VW Golf will be based on an updated version of the MQB platform. It will be offered with a variety of engine options, likely including a (95 PS/115 PS) 1.0-litre TSI three-cylinder petrol unit may kick-off the range, a (130 PS/150 PS) 1.5-litre TSI four-cylinder petrol unit, a new 1.5-litre TDI diesel unit and a new 2.0-litre TDI diesel unit. The 1.0- and 1.5-litre petrol engines will feature a 48-volt mild-hybrid system if specified with a 7-speed DCT, Volkswagen has confirmed. The company has said that it will extend electrification to the entire fleet gradually. Reports say that a 12-volt mild-hybrid system is planned for the new 1.5L diesel engine.

The VW Golf Mk8 range will include GTE plug-in hybrid, GTI performance and R high-performance variants. However, there won't be a VW eGolf this time, to avoid clashing with the VW ID.3, the first of the VW ID family of futuristic EVs.

The 2020 VW Golf is said to go on sale in Europe in early 2020. The seventh-gen model was being evaluated to be launched in India in the GTI variant, but that didn't happen. Maybe the eighth-gen model will be launched here at some point.
