Classic Legends unveils the BS-VI ready engine that will power the new Jawa motorcycles

Classic Legends has unveiled the all-new engine for the soon to be launched motorcycles, bringing Jawa brand a step closer to arriving in India. The new Jawa engine, which is engine built on a BS6 ready platform, is said to be a befitting testament to the old one.

The new 293 cc engine was developed with one of the world’s leading engine specialist at the technical center in Varese, Italy. It is ready to comply with the new BS-VI norms that will come into effect from April 2019.

The new engine is a 293 cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, DOHC, fuel injected unit that packs a decent 27 bhp of maximum power and 28 Nm of peak torque. It is tuned to offer a generous mid-range and a flat torque curve.

The motor was developed with one of the world’s leading engine specialist at the technical center in Varese, Italy. It is claimed to be strong enough to last a lifetime. A team of sound engineers in Italy worked extensively through countless cycles of harmonic pipe combinations and multiple other permutations to achieve the unique exhaust note of the old Jawa motorcycles from the new motor.

The company has revealed the specifications of the new engine, but no further details about the upcoming motorcycles.

In an interview published in September 2018, Anupam Thareja, Founder, Classic Legends, said that the Jawa motorcycles would arrive “before the end of the year.” The brand will re-start its India operations with three motorcycles.

Thareja also added that the brand has already started to receive a positive response from potential dealers. He said that as many as 64 dealers are already interested in the brand and that number could go to at least 100 by the time the motorcycles arrive in the Indian market.

Regular readers would already know that Mahindra & Mahindra is working on bringing back the Jawa and BSA range of motorcycles in the Indian market. In October 2016, Mahindra & Mahindra acquired a controlling stake in Classic Legends Private Limited.

In addition to the Jawa and BSA brands, according to a recent report, Mahindra Group is aiming to revive Peugeot Motorcycles. This is what Prakash Wakankar, CEO, 2 Wheeler business, Mahindra & Mahindra has said in an interview:

We will see three very distinct heritage, with interpretation from Britain (BSA), a combine of Europe and India (Jawa) and a French interpretation with Peugeot Motorcycles.

The $20 billion Mahindra Group owns a 51% stake in the French two-wheeler major.
