With more stringent emission norms and safety regulations set to come into effect starting next year, many, if not all slow-selling cars will go out of production. In one such move, homegrown automaker M&M will pull the plug on the Mahindra Verito and Mahindra Verito Vibe.

The BSVI emission norms and new safety regulations aren’t the only reasons the Mahindra Verito and Verito Vibe are saying goodbye. Mahindra has decided to shift its focus to UVs. These are the only 'cars' (conventional fuel) the company sells currently, and with their discontinuation, Mahindra will become a UV-exclusive company again. It will revamp its dealerships in the future and name them ‘World of SUVs’.

Speaking about the discontinuation of the Mahindra Verito and Mahindra Verito Vibe to Autocar India, Rajan Wadhera, President, Automotive Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra, said: “That was a product we came up with a long time ago and over a period it will fade away.”

Commenting on this matter, Dr. Pawan Goenka, MD, Mahindra & Mahindra, said: “In the future our product portfolio will be BS-VI-compliant, which means we can discontinue the low-volume products.”

“The Verito has moved towards the e-platform and so the conventional products may not go beyond the BS-VI timeline.”

Mahindra Verito is originally the 14-year old first generation Dacia Logan. Mahindra manufactures it under a special licensing agreement. It was introduced in India by the Mahindra Renault 51:49 joint venture in 2007. It marked the entry of the French automaker in our market. In April 2010, the Indo-French duo parted ways with Mahindra purchasing Renault’s 49% stake. Renault established its business separately beginning with the launch of the Renault Fluence in 2011.

In April 2011, Mahindra refreshed the Logan and gave it a new name - Verito. In June 2013, the Verito Vibe followed as a sub-4m sedan. In 2016, this model was rumoured to leave the market owing to poor sales but has survived a few scares.

The Mahindra Verito and Mahindra Verito Vibe pull in less than 100 customers a month. Mahindra had sold only four units of the latter last fiscal year and hadn’t produced a single unit this year.
