Gaadiwaadi has spotted the Renault RBC (codename) testing on the outskirts of Chennai. The latest sighting is in sync with the company's plan of launching a compact MPV with seven seats in India.

The Renault RBC compact MPV could be a modern & premium alternative to personal car buyers who find the Eeco or Omni suitable to their lifestyle.

Underpinning the Renault RBC will be a modified version of the Kwid's CMF-A platform. Dubbed as 'CMF-A+', the new architecture will be longer and wider. The MPV will measure less than 4-metres in length, which will allow it to benefit from the least amount of GST. The new platform will receive structural reinforcements for additional safety, and the RBC will be the recipient of the latest passive safety systems of the Kwid like the rear ELR (Emergency Locking Retractor) seatbelt.

Reportedly, the Renault RBC will not be sold with a diesel engine option. The only motor will be an updated version of the Kwid's 1.0-litre SCe petrol engine sporting a turbocharger. Currently available in a naturally aspirated format, the three-cylinder engine produces 68 PS and 91 Nm. The turbocharged version should have healthier torque and power to lug the extra weight of the MPV.

The company is said to be working on balancing style and rear headroom of the MPV. Unlike the Datsun Go and Go+, the new model won't look like an extruded hatchback. The latest images hint at a rising beltline and wide pillars. The rear-end features wraparound tail lamps.

On the inside, the Renault RBC is likely to look a fair bit like that of the 2018 Renault Kwid, carrying over, among other items, the dashboard, seats with armrest, and an integrated reverse parking camera in the MediaNAV system. Given the safety norms that come into effect from 1 July 2019, the new model will offer a SBR, speed warning, driver airbag, ABS, and rear parking sensors as standard features.

A turbocharged version of the Renault Kwid's 1.0-litre SCe motor is expected to power the RBC, with no option for a diesel engine.

The Renault RBC is likely to have a starting price of INR 5 lakh (ex-showroom). It will be positioned below the next generation Maruti Ertiga.
