As Renault continues with the development of the RBC, a new batch of spy photos has surfaced online. The new MPV is a made-for-India model.

The Renault RBC will likely employ a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine.

While the Renault Espace taps the high-end MPV segment with its captivating design and upmarket features, the RBC will sit at the exact opposite of the spectrum serving as a low-cost people carrier for emerging markets like India. Renault has confirmed that the latter will measure no longer than 4,000 mm, to take benefit of the local tax structure.

The Renault RBC will ride on a modified version of the Renault Kwid’s platform (CMF-A) called ‘CMF-A+’. It will have a longer wheelbase (2,422 mm+) for a roomier cabin. The third-row seats may accommodate only children comfortably, as is the case in the Datsun GO+.

Keeping in mind the Lodgy and the Kwid’s 0-star ASEAN NCAP rating and the Datsun GO+’s 1-star Global NCAP rating, as well as the more stringent safety norms that become effective in 2019, Renault will take the RBC’s safety aspect more seriously. In addition to having a more robust cell, the MPV may feature driver and co-driver SBRs, driver airbag, ABS with EBD and speed alert system as standard.

The 1.0-litre SCe naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine (68 PS/91 Nm) would run out of the breath handling the extra load of passengers or luggage. So, it is widely speculated that adding a turbocharger for better performance could become the optimal solution. Do note that none of the Renault-Nissan Alliance models (made in India) is available with a turbocharged petrol engine. A diesel engine option is unlikely.

The Renault RBC will compete with the Datsun GO+, as Maruti Suzuki has apparantly dropped the 7-seat Wagon R project.
