As we have known for 13 months, Renault, for India, is working on a low-cost MPV codenamed RBC. IAB reader Gokulraj Kanagaraj has shared a spy video of an RBC prototype spotted undergoing road testing in Chennai last week.

Following the SUV-styled Renault Kwid that took entry-level hatchback market by storm, the Renault RBC will mark the brand’s daring venture into the sub-4 metre MPV space that comprises the Maruti Eeco and the Datsun GO+.

Spy media suggests that the Renault RBC has strong hints of the brand’s European models such as the Renault Espace and Renault Megane at the front, in its upper grille and headlamp design. Elsewhere, the MPV features roof rails and horizontally positioned wraparound tail lamps. Heavy camouflage on the test mules has kept most other details still hidden.

The Renault RBC will ride on an extended version of a new ‘CMF-A+’ platform, which, reports say, is an extension of the Renault Kwid’s CMF-A platform. It will have a longer wheelbase (hatchback: 2,422 mm) and seats for seven persons. The entry-level MPV may employ a turbocharged version of the entry-level hatchback's 1.0-litre SCe three-cylinder petrol engine.

The CMF-A platform-based hatchback had a 0-star safety rating from Global NCAP, which was revised to 1-star later when a driver airbag was added and modifications were made to the car. Renault will have to get the safety equation right this time with a more robust cell and better safety equipment. Like the Datsun GO+, the Renault RBC could feature dual-front airbags, driver SBR, ABS with EBD and BA and rear parking sensors as standard.

The RBC could be pitched as the safer, chicer and feature-rich alternative to the Maruti Eeco in smaller towns and cities. It also has potential in the cab aggregator segment, but family buyers would be Renault's No.1 priority.

The Renault RBC will go on sale in India sometime in 2019. Its prices could start between INR 4-5 lakh (ex-showroom) serving as a premium alternative to the Maruti Eeco and base variants of the new Maruti Ertiga.
