Renault RBC, the company's low-cost MPV that will launch next year, has been spotted during the homologation procedure by ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). Prices of the new model could start as low as INR 4.5 lakh.

The Renault RBC is a part of Groupe Renault's 'Drive The Future' six-year plan that aims to deliver annual revenues of over €70 billion.

Going by various spy images so far, the front-end of the Renault RBC comes with the identifying design features borrowed from the Renault Espace and Renault Megane. Other visual details that have been observed until now include roof rails, small wheels, and horizontally positioned wraparound tail lamps.

Underpinning the Renault RBC is a new ‘CMF-A+’ platform, which is, basically, an extended version of the Renault Kwid’s CMF-A architecture. The sub-4m MPV will have a longer wheelbase than its hatchback sibling (2,422 mm) and offer seven seats. Powering the new model will be a turbocharged version of the Kwid's 1.0-litre SCe three-cylinder petrol engine. There is no diesel option, reportedly.

It's relevant here that the CMF-A platform Kwid scored a 0-star safety rating from Global NCAP, which was later updated to 1-star due to the introduction of a driver's side airbag and changes to the shell. The Renault RBC, however, is expected to fare better in this department from the get-go, offering a more robust structure and higher safety equipment. In adherence with the stricter regulations, the new model will have to provide driver's side airbag, front seat-belt reminder (SBR), ABS with EBD and BA, and rear parking sensors as standard equipment.

The Renault RBC RXZ variant we reckon will compete with the Maruti Ertiga LXi, while lower variants will take on the recently updated Datsun GO+ and the Maruti Eeco.
